Jon Alden, head of Lowcountry Preparatory School in Pawleys Island, gave the eight graduates three recommendations during commencement exercises last week at the school.

“Have courage to dare, have strength to persist when the chips are down, and take solace in knowing that God loves the imperfect you,” Alden said.

He told the graduates that they are starting on a journey of independence.

“Following these recommendations will serve you well,” he added.

The eight graduates are José Javier Casasus Artiles, Ulysses Unique Gardner, Sarah Loryn Hurston, Jessica Margaret Kavanagh, Jesse Christopher Marshall, Emily Mildred Morris, Jessica Marie Schwiers and Taylor Delaney Tison.

Valedictorian Jessica Kavanagh spoke about Lowcountry Prep’s campus as a “different planet” with opportunity everywhere.

“Lowcountry Prep lays the groundwork for success,” Kavanagh said.

“It is a place where you are consistently challenged and faculty takes time out of their busy schedules to make sure you understand the material.”

She said taking part in many clubs and sports, becoming the captain for many of these, has helped her become a leader.

“Lowcountry Prep has opened up so many doors to me that I have never imagined,” Kavanagh said.

“It has been four awesome years of my life.”

Her advice to younger students was to participate in sports and clubs, and to volunteer to take a leadership role.

“Never be afraid to take a chance,” she said.

Salutatorian Jessica Schwiers compared high school at Lowcountry Prep to a “long and well-worn journey” and the future as an uncertain path.”

She said the graduating class has grown together and has been strengthened by the challenges the school has offered.

“Our teachers have filled us with as much knowledge as we will take,” Schwiers said. “I believe our chances for success are in our favor.”

Her advice to younger students is to spend time with their classmates.

“Cherish every moment as indeed I have,” Schwiers said.
