The Georgetown High School Student Council hosted its annual “Miss GHS Scholarship” Pageant on Saturday, Jan. 28, to great acclaim.
With over 350 spectators in attendance, 19 outstanding young women in the GHS family participated in a special evening to recognize their academic abilities, talent and personality attributes.
Contestants from all four grade levels competed in preliminary interviews, talent and evening gown competition before a panel of five visiting judges.
The evening culminated in the crowning of Miss Freshman LaJaya Brown, Miss Sophomore Kayla Pope, Miss Junior Yesinia Bustos Romero, Miss Senior Katie Bogan, Miss Congeniality Keerthana Moro, and Miss Georgetown High School 2012 Andrea Roman.
Miss Georgetown High School 2012 was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the GHS Student Council.
This scholarship is funded entirely by funds raised by the Student Council, overseen by co-advisors Kristin Altman and Tripp Hartley.
“The Student Council, with the enthusiastic and professional assistance of the GHS Art Department, student volunteers, maintenance staff and administration was thrilled to host this event and award the scholarship money,” Tripp Hartley said.
“Our goal is to help provide our students with tools to set personal goals they can successfully accomplish.”
The judges were Mrs. Myrtle Morris of Georgetown, Mrs. Katie Kern of Mount Pleasant, Ms. Sara Jane Marshall of Charleston, Ms. JouJou Sofa of Myrtle Beach and Ms. Jillian Irizarry of New York City, N.Y.
The pageant was emceed by Kai Logan, Miss Georgetown High 2011, and Student Council Representative Cameron Drayton.
Dazzling entertainment was provided by Georgetown’s Studio of Dance, LLC, GHS Senior Ashana Sutton and GMS seventh grader Cheley Elliott.
“This was an extraordinary event with an exceptional group of people,” said Jillian Irizarry, a New York City executive and South Carolina native who served as a judge.
“I am honored to have participated and truly enjoyed the sense of community that envelopes Georgetown High School.”
Special recognition is given to GHS ESOL teacher Carla Gaskill, Katie’s Project of Myrtle Beach, and all of the families who supported all of the participants.
GHS Principal Craig Evans echoed his enthusiasm for the Scholarship Pageant.
He, along with his administrative staff, were all in attendance.
