• Snow is reported falling in Maryville, according to residents reporting on Facebook. Snow is also falling at Winyah Estates. Some scattered flurries have been seen at the Georgetown Times on Front Street.
•Sam Hodge, Georgetown County’s Emergency Manager, met with emergency and public officials this afternoon after talking with the National Weather Service.
He said the bulk of the snow is expected between 9 p.m. tonight and 5 a.m. Saturday.
Five inches — maybe a little more — expected.
Hodge said DOT crews will salt the bridges on Highway 17 and Highway 701 this afternoon and will plow the bridges as needed.
The bridges will not be closed.
Hodge said the bigger driving concern will be Sunday morning after whatever falls melts and refreezes creating black ice.
He said extra crews will be staffed at area fire departments.
• The Georgetown City Fire Department issued a special weather statement today at noon.
The National Weather Service office in Wilmington has placed the City of
Georgetown under a Winter Storm Warning until 8 A.M. Saturday.
"A winter storm warning means there is good confidence for significant snow,
sleet or ice accumulations that will impact the area during the next 24 to 36
hours," the statement said.
Residents are encouraged to be careful with heating devices and fireplaces.
Overuse can result in a potential for fire. If you have to use candles, please do
so carefully. Now is the time to stock up on flashlight batteries and put a fresh
battery in your smoke detector.
