City Councilman Paige Sawyer welcomes the Coast Guard and other guests at Thursday's luncheon.
Thursday was Coast Guard Appreciation Day in the City of Georgetown and members of the local station were honored at a luncheon at the Church Street headquarters of VFW Post 6444.
After a welcome from City Councilman Paige Sawyer, a proclamation was read by Mayor Jack Scoville. It says the Coast Guard traces its history to the Revenue Cutter Service which was established by Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton in August 1790 and has expanded its mission over the years and now constitutes the United States’ premier maritime agency.
Station Georgetown “is a vital component of the maritime community in Georgetown and the members of the unit make substantial contributions to the community economically, socially and educationally,” the proclamation states.
It continues by saying the day to honor the members of the Coast Guard was a way to show gratitude “for their unselfish service to the nation and this community.”
Scoville, speaking to the members in attendance, said “we are all much safer and secure because of your service.”
