Georgetown High School’s athletic director, Al Hutchinson, is on administrative leave with pay after he was arrested in Horry County on a charge of driving under the influence.
Hutchinson, who is also a culinary arts teacher and softball coach at the Georgetown Career Center, was arrested shortly after 3 a.m. Jan. 23, according to booking information at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center. He was released on a $1,000 bail.
School Superintendent Dr. Randy Dozier said a review of Hutchinson’s arrest is pending.
Hutchinson’s attorney, Hutchinson's attorney, Bert von Herrmann, said his client maintains his innocence and they both expect “a positive outcome.”
He said the matter is “a misunderstanding of circumstances” and “there was no indication of impairment we have seen.”
Hutchinson, a district worker for 27 years, will remain on leave as the internal investigation continues.
About that, von Herrmann said Hutchinson “is in no way a danger to children, the education process or the school system.”
He also said he expects Hutchinson to return to work, possibly sometime this week.

For all those with negative comments… were you there??? Just so you know Horry County has a group of officers that do nothing else but arrest people for DUI’s. And yep they get perks too “for bringing in the money”. There is absolutely no proof of him being intoxicated. Just wait one day you will see that it is simply their word against yours. And believe me they can say and do just about anything they want. Don’t believe me? Take a wrong turn in Surfside Thurs. thru Sun. and you too will be hauled off to jail. I agree that this media hype is borderline slander. Will it make the news when the case is dropped? NOPE, cause there is no story in that headline. Teachers are not political figures and did not sign on to have their personal lives exposed for nut cases like some of you to judge. Oh I’m sure we could all make a few comments about you given the opportunity. And where in the world did someone come up with associating an alleged DUI (mind you he was not driving—strange huh??) with child molestation? You must be the biggest idiot in SC. That is like saying children playing cops and robbers will all be murders. If you don’t have anything intelligent to say then keep your uneducated, unemployed stupid comments to yourself. And yes there was a teacher of a different shade arrested for DUI, he was NOT put on admin. leave, NOT put in the paper and then given a promotion…. so how do you like them reverse racism cards now? The district should be real careful because everything comes out in the wash. Posted by kissit on 2/5/2010 |

Um hello! He was charged with DUI not convicted with DUI he has no criminal record and common sence is your innocent until proven guilty yes it would be devastating to loose a child for any reason but people speed everyday and get tickets they run stop lights and signs and people are hurt but do we stand by the road and convict them no they go to traffic court and get convicted get it dropped or reduced Was he driving a vehicle or was he standing on the side of the road out of gas would he have driven the vehicle if he could have that we will never know was he waiting on the person that was driving walk to a station this too we dont know so lets just go ahead and find him guilty thats what alot of other people are doing I am against drinking and driving and I pray everyday for it to stop but I will not be the judge of this man when I dont know for sure that he was doing what he was charged of that is left up to the judge not you and me and as for the race card who started that the white man or the black man everyday we work to try and get harmony for everyone but there is always that back woods person trying stop it it does not matter what color you are in GODS eyes so maybe if we all go color blind we will always be the same man and woman not black or white we will all just look grey and live in harmony I dont think a DUI comes in WDUI or BDUI it is driving under the influence no color coding needed Posted by on 2/5/2010 |

I must say to the person who thought he never needed to be softball coach, never has been a fair coach, depends on who your parents are and what they do for the team,Let me guess you had the best player out there and nobody saw it as you sat on your behind and did nothing to help the other parents make this a better program, let me guess the other parents owed you or something Have you looked at your post you look like a kid who lost his candy, but you can bet had your child been on the team you would have jumped in that car and watched her ride off on that bus with AL Hutchenson driving behind the wheel get over not getting your way and judging this for what it is not your chance to say I got you back for not letting me have what I believed you owed me. And to the parents of the GHS softball team dont let the ignorance of lazy people influence you Help your team and support your program. The word team does not have an I in it, but people like this person will say no but the word me is,get over it it is what it is. WE Hutch as the parents of the GEORGETOWN HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL TEAM support you 100% not 99.9 % 100% and it is our choice, not the choice of outsiders to decide what we think is best for our girls and we do not except anything negative being said about you from people whom have no weight you worry about yours and we will worry about ours find a new back to ride because Hutch has all of ours to lean on for strength. I sit here and look at all the comments being listed on HUTCH I see a few people see you for what you really are. Al Hutchinson coached my daughter and he put up with more attitude from her than could ever be excepted from the average adult ,but guess what he never gave up on her even when she walked away he was there to welcome her back,He not only coached her , he was her friend and guidance threw the hard times of high school life. He has worked very hard to make our program one of the best around, he has put our girls before himself and his wife more than one time and I find it a great shame on everyone that is sitting here being his judge. I guess this is your chance to ride someone when they are down, well guess what it will not enlarge you in any way, I think eveyone that is throwing stones needs to remember there are alot of stones still on the ground and they may hit you next and the ground can be a hard place to land ,but the best thing about Hutch is he would stop and give you a hand to stand back up. This is a very private problem and it is not our job to turn it into my chance to get even.I have followed him with my child and many others on that pickel bus for 5 years and I would trust him today just as strongly as I did then. When this is over and he is found NOT GUILTY for being beside a vehicle and not in it not operating it or even riding in it, just being at the wrong place at the wrong time, the people who took the time to judge him my question to you is will you stand up and say I am sorry, chances are 10 to 1 there will be no one there to do it because no body wants to hit you while your up only when your down because they just got one step up in life but I know they will find the easy way out they will make the excuses of he paid someone off, knew the right people, he was white , he had a good lawyer etc etc etc.Hutch I hope that you come threw this a stronger person. And I hope that people will stop and see that this not only effects you it effects our children, your wife, parents and girls and that they remember until you are proven guilty you are innocent We wonder why our kids are so negative well hello we are paving the way for them.Judge not people or you to shall be judged. HE WAS NOT AND HAD NOT BEEN DRINKING, THEREFORE, HE WAS NOT DRIVING DRUNK. HE WAS NOT PULLED OVER BY THE POLICE. Only in the backward state of South Carolina could you run out of gas and end up getting arrested. You people need a life!! Posted by on 2/4/2010 |

OK - so the man gets a trial. How many people in that courtroom have had similar legal problems. Are lawyers and judges and bailiffs ever accused of any crimes? We don't see other people held up to public attention like we do for teachers. Life is not fair, but our teachers really get poor treatment on many fronts. Posted by on 2/4/2010 |

My God folks,,Don't bury the guy till convicted!!I guess Lynch Mobs are alive and well in Georgetown!! Posted by on 2/4/2010 |

If he is found guilty and If this was on his record when he applied for the job he would most likely be denied. So what is the difference now he worked for the school for 27 years and that makes it all better. He shouldn't be allowed to continue his job as co athletic director or the varsity softball coach. He never needed to be the softball coach, never has been a fair coach. But then again GHS sports will never be fair it all depends on who your parents are and what they do for the team. Your going to let this man drive your children around. NOT ME. But knowing the way Georgetown works he will get a slap on the wrist and be back to coaching and working before we even know it Posted by on 2/4/2010 |

Hutch we support u 100%. Most of these people don't even know the story behind what happen they are just running off at the mouth. You are and have always been a great teacher and softball coach and would never put any of the students at jepardy. Just because he is a teacher doesnt mean he can not drink or that he may not break the law - we are all guilty of that at some point or another. If you are speeding you are breaking the law and I dont see us all on the News or in the Gtown Times for breaking the speed limit. He was just at the wrong place at the wrong time. As for the race issue - that is always used when something is done "so called" wrong for a white person. I think I recall a black district employees that had been arrested for DUI and what da ya know... he/she is still in the district...in fact a better postion than at time of the arrest. So please dont go there. Hutch keep up the good work and we all respect u! Posted by on 2/3/2010 |

To each of you here screaming about breaking the law, his (potential) record, etc. you need to stop and have a lesson of your own real quick. A charge in no way constitutes guilt. Unless and until PROVEN guilty all it is, is a charge. Further, for his attorney to comment “there was no indication of impairment we have seen”, this matter will easily be disposed of and pled to a Reckless Driving at worst. Consequences for a reckless driving should not and will not have any repercussion on his career. No jail time, no ADSAP, no long-term suspension. $445.00 and a bruised driving record. That is why I said alleged crime. Given the amount of info I have I can not say he is innocent or guilty, however when people say race is involved it is a sorry excuse in every way. As far as signing my name I could be someone in authority who will have my every word examined under a microscope and sometimes I just want to say what I think instead of what is politically correct. I could be black, white or green, what difference does it make, this is my opinion and we all have one :). Posted by on 2/3/2010 |

If you can't sign your name then don't comment. You are innocent until proven guilty! Then when that is proven one way or the other, ask yourself what would Jesus do? This man's livelihood is at stake here! Posted by Louis H Rubin on 2/2/2010 |

To the person playing the race card. This seems to always be played in order to take the focus of the alleged crime. Posted by on 2/2/2010 |

OMG, if we prosecuted everyone using the what if theory, we would all be in jail! He has coached my daughter for years and all of the players love and respect him. I am an advocate for children and I work in a professional capacity daily with children of all ages. He is an adult and he was not on district time when this happened. So for all of you finger pointers, get a life and let him get back to his. We love you and support you Hutch. Every district should be so lucky as to have an Al Hutchinson. Posted by on 2/2/2010 |

I think the media is making a big deal out of nothing...over reaction, this sells papers. This man has been doing his job and doing it well for 27 years! In this country just because you are charged does not mean that you are GUILTY! Remember that before you judge anyone... The cops around here have nothing better to do than to bust people for the smallest of infractions...how about find the missing girl or catch murders and taking drugs off our streets. He is a great teacher, he does not deserve this crap! Posted by on 2/2/2010 |

How short the memory is of Gtown...there once was a superintendent that was caught with open container and there was not this much persecution. I think the Times jumped on the bandwagon with the Sun News as far as openly airing teachers personal issues. And right now he is innocent UNTIL proven guilty. Posted by on 2/2/2010 |

Last year I sent a letter to the district office and the scholl speaking about this man. Now he is in a place where if it were a a teacher of another shade we would be trying to get their job back as opposed to saving the job. He has no place in the school, he is supposed to be above and beyond reproach???? How are we to trust our most prized posessions, our children with him. How will we be sure he is not under the influence when he is transporting our kids.Come let's be real if he were black he would be history. Posted by on 2/2/2010 |

My question is this: A lot of people are saying it's his personal life and the district should buzz off. This may or may not be true. What I want to know is, where were all you people when the district has been trying to tell teachers what they can do on their home computers on their own time. This is a total invasion of privacy but you people have been silent on that. Posted by on 2/2/2010 |

Those of you defending him, um, hello? Wake up! He broke the LAW. We can't have teachers with criminal records, that's just common sense. So, just because he wasn't "that" drunk, or just because it was on his "own time" doesn't matter! He broke the law, and that is unfortunate, but maybe he should have remembered his responsibilities before he decided to drink and drive. Posted by MADD mom on 2/2/2010 |

I just could not let this one go without commenting. Are people in Georgetown so bored that they have to enjoy bringing down or trying to bring down someones character publicly? Clean around your on doorstep before you go and gossip about someone else's. Times like this are when you find out who your true friends are and are not. Posted by on 2/2/2010 |

I am appalled that something like this is public knowledge. The fact that he is a district employee is irrelevant. No where in any contract does it say that A) Teachers and district employees are not allowed to drink and B) Allowed to do it publicly. Yes, I get it, he was under the influence driving which is illegal, I get it. But this is nearly slander publicly announcing his profession. It goes back to just last week the teachers in Conway who were put in the paper for public intoxication. Since when is it illegal to have drinks with co workers, doesn't matter if you are a teacher or not. Hutch is a premiere teacher, great person and wonderful friend. Sometimes the worst things come to the best people and I am sure he will take responsibility but this is no reflection on what his capabilities in the classroom are. Posted by on 2/2/2010 |

First of all let's remember that everyone is innocent in this country until proven guilty. I am a parent of one of his players and know more of the details than the average person. He was arrested for DUI. However, he was not pulled over for driving the car. There is no proof that he was ever driving the car. The charges will probably be dropped. Don't prosecute the man before he gets his day in court. We support him in this difficult time and feel as though he should not lose his position as a coach or a teacher. Posted by on 2/2/2010 |

He broke the law NO MATTER who's time he was on! If he molested a teen "on his own time" that should affect his job?? You cannot have a record and work for the county.....He should have thought about his job BEFORE he drove that car drunk. Posted by A citizen AGAINST drunk driving on 2/2/2010 |

What does his arrest have to do with his job?? His arrest for DUI evidently has not affected his teaching ability... The School District needs to stay out of employees personal life outside of school property and when school is not in session.., unless the situation deals with a student... Yes he broke the law but driving under the influence, but it happened on his own personal time, not the school districts... Again GCSD should be ashamed for inserting there self into his personal business..... Posted by Georgetown reader and former student on 2/2/2010 |
