County hires first public information officer
Jackie Broach of Pawleys Island, who has been a reporter with the Coastal Observer since 2006, will be Georgetown County’s first public information officer as of Aug. 13.
Broach, 29, will be in charge of communications with the media, creating a county presence on social networking websites and launching a county newsletter in an effort to make residents better informed about activities occurring in the county and services received by taxpayers.
“Georgetown County has always done an outstanding job of serving and looking out for the best interests of its residents,” Broach said. “I’ve seen that through six years of attending and reporting on County Council meetings and talking with department heads. Unfortunately, I’ve often heard from residents who are unaware of so much that’s going on in the county.”
Plans are also to update the county’s website, making it more contemporary and user friendly. Broach will be involved in that in an advisory capacity and will also be involved in coordinating county events.
The county started seeking applicants this summer. Sixteen applications were received and six candidates were interviewed.
County Administrator Sel Hemingway said there were several highly qualified candidates, but Broach’s “professional experience and familiarity with Georgetown County will enable her to make an immediate impact on the improvement of county communications.”
Broach has 13 years of experience as a journalist. She is a native of Lake City and a graduate of Francis Marion University in Florence, where she received a bachelor’s in mass communication, and also studied photography and marketing.
She has also worked for the Lake City News & Post and the (Greenwood) Index-Journal.
Greg Troutman, the county’s human resources director, would not disclose Broach’s salary, but said her pay grade was 135, which puts the salary between $38,594 and $57,891.
