Georgetown’s new city administrator, Chris Carter, officially began his new job Thursday.

He was given a tour of the city’s utility facilities by interim Administrator Carey Smith who will wrap up his duties in Georgetown next week.

After the tour Smith and Carter returned to City Hall where Carter was given the keys to his office for the first time.

Smith will spend next week helping Carter meet department heads and employees and they will continue to tour the city so he will be ready to take over once Smith returns to his home in Rock Hill.

Carter comes to Georgetown from Williston, S.C. where he was the administrator since December 2010.

Carter's Georgetown contract is for three years and states he will be paid $105,000 annually.

Before taking the job in Williston, Carter was the North Wilkesboro, N.C. town manager for six years.

Carter’s additional professional experience includes serving as interim finance director, planner and supervisor in Sylva, N.C. He also worked as adjunct professor of political science at the Spartanburg Community College.

He graduated from UNC Greensboro and later  received a master’s degree in public administration from Appalachian State.

His wife Joan is a middle school teacher in Flat Rock, N.C. She plans to finish the school year and then relocate to Georgetown this summer.
