The 2012 Hurricane Season does not officially begin until Friday and even though there have already been two named storms, forecasters are predicting a average season.
We have already had Alberto and what was Tropical Storm Beryl moved through the area Wednesday.
Despite the busy pre-season start, the season is expected to be less active than in recent years, according to predictions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. They predict there will be about nine to 15 storms during this year’s Atlantic hurricane season which officially begins Friday.
The agency predicts that this year’s total will include four to eight hurricanes. One to three of those could become major hurricanes.
This season marks the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew’s catastrophic landfall in South Florida as a Category 5 storm.
Last year marked the sixth consecutive year without the U.S. landfall of a major hurricane, which are classified as Category 3 storms with sustained winds of 111 mph or higher.
Beryl brought rain
Beryl — the strongest storm to hit the United States in May since 1908 — made landfall near Jacksonville, Fla., on Sunday night as a strong tropical storm.
It began slowly moving northeast and brought between one and two inches of rain to Georgetown County.
