A dozen streets were completely closed and about 20 trees were downed in Andrews as a severe storm hit the area on Wednesday evening.

A major storm cell moved through Andrews around 6:45 pm and caused trees and power lines to fall, blocking 12 streets in the town, Mayor Rodney Giles said.

People had to be rescued from one car that had live wires on it from the storm, Giles said.

No one was seriously hurt in the event that town officials said was caused by straight line winds -- not a tornado.

One home had its roof ripped off by the winds, which the weather service warned could exceed 60 mph from the storm.

Georgetown Fire Department responded to assist the Andrews Fire Department, Giles said. Some of the streets affected are: Beach Avenue, Cottonwood, Maple, Cedar and MLK, Giles said.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued from just before 7 until 8 pm for southern Horry County.

At 6:58 pm the  National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.

Parts of the storm also hit Conway, where some residents reported hail.
