A vehicle that was stopped on Highway 701 is being blamed for an
accident involving an ambulance that occurred Monday morning.
Four
people from the ambulance — a child, his mother and two crew members —
were transported to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries after
the ambulance overturned.
According to S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl.
Sonny Collins, there was an unknown vehicle stopped in the northbound
lane on Highway 701 near Green Acres Mobile Home Park at about 7 a.m.
A
pickup truck — driven by 22-year-old Maxmino Hernandez — was also
northbound and swerved off the road to avoid hitting the stopped
vehicle.
When Hernandez pulled his truck back onto the Highway, he
was struck by the southbound ambulance, which was on the way to the
hospital with the child who was suffered a laceration.
The driver of
the ambulance — 32-year-old Charles Williams — was found not to be at
fault, Collins said.
He also said Hernandez will not be charged.
However,
charges are possible against the driver of the vehicle that was stopped
if that person is ever found. The driver of that car left the scene,
said Collins.
He said the driver had to know there had been an
accident because it occurred right in front of him or her.
“You can’t
just stop in the road for no reason,” Collins said.
According to
County Assistant Fire Chief Tony Hucks, all four were taken to the
hospital and are OK.
He said they were all strapped into their seats
when the crash occurred.
