“Life in the Village”

I absolutely loved the above-referenced column as it bubbled up so many fond memories which have never left me.

Although I am a Winyah High graduate, Class of ‘55, I attended the first and second grade at McClellanville in ‘42 and ‘43. My father graduated from McClellanville High in 1932 and I know this because I recently found his diploma. I also know that he and I had the same first grade teacher.

Her name was Miss Jane Taylor and I harbor a mental image of her to this day. When learning to read, she really made the Dick and Jane characters come alive along with their dog, Spot.

My Dad was brought up by his Aunt Jennie Stanland Graham who was married to Wade Hampton Graham, both of whom are buried in the local cemetery.

I still think “the Village” is one of the most peaceful places on this earth and still enjoy driving through on my way to Carolina Seafood to buy seafood from Rutledge Leland.

Thanks, Karen, for reminding me to cherish my childhood.
