Form Follows Function

In the late 19th century the American architect Louis Sullivan coined the phrase “Form Follows Function”. His full quote is

 “It is the pervading law of all things organic and inorganic,

Of all things physical and metaphysical,

Of all things human and all things super-human,

Of all true manifestations of the head,

Of the heart, of the soul,

That the life is recognizable in its expression,

That form ever follows function. This is the law”

It was his belief that value is determined by its utility and this principle was from then on the established norm when buildings, homes, city parks or developments were constructed. He thought out this hypothesis at the same time that the historic district of Georgetown was being developed.

It is not reasonable to disregard modern advances in technology and design when determining weather a building is true to its historic appearance. HardiePlank looks like wood. HardiePlank, however doesn’t burn as wood does.

If we want to keep the historic houses so true to their time, why do we allow air conditioning systems to be placed in the yard beside the houses ? Why do we allow copper pipes to be used? Why do we allow satellite dishes on the rooftops? Why do we demand we use single-handed faucets? Why do we allow thermopane windows?

The earliest known written work on the subject of architecture is by a Roman architect named Vitruvius in the early 1st century. He stated that a good building should satisfy three principles. Durability — Utility — Beauty.

The ARB is in over their head, as are the mayor and some council members. This long drawn-out nightmare is a disgrace to this good community. It has only to do with petty jealousy and hatred that is costing the taxpayers of Georgetown money and grief. Let’s get it over with. The Rothrock’s homes pass the test.
