Kudos for hospital
On the afternoon of Jan. 5, 2010, I was rushed to the Georgetown Memorial Hospital emergency room.
There, at once, I was given prompt professional care.
It was determined I needed emergency surgery. My family doctor, Dr. Tom Crosby and Dr. Matthew Metz, the surgeon, were notified.
Major surgery followed the next day.
The following eight days I was cared for by the staff on both the third and second floors of Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
During the entire eight days I was in the hospital, I was amazed at the efficient and caring manner provided to me by every member of the hospital staff.
My room was kept spotless, meals were delivered promptly and were quite tasty.
Everytime I called for any type of assistance, someone promptly came. They were always caring and pleasant.
We in Georgetown are blessed to have Georgetown Memorial Hospital and its staff of pleasant and caring individuals.
We are also blessed to have a community where we have many competent and caring doctors, nurses and health care workers.
My sincere thanks to everyone who cared for me, prayed for me and helped my family in any manner.
I give special thanks to God for allowing me to be a part of the Georgetown community for over 54 years.

Government spending
Just recently, I read two articles about government related spending that I feel compelled to comment on.
One article talked about how the current high unemployment is affecting the number of teachers that are being hired by schools.
The other article told about 119 million dollars in grants, from The U.S. Government, to fight obesity in The United States.
I am probably one of the most politically liberal members of my family, but even I have to speak out against such clear wasteful spending by our government!
What is the great unknown about obesity ?
I do believe that a very small percentage of obesity is caused by real medical problems, but the overwhelming cases are simply due to over-eating and a gross lack of exercise!
How in the name of common sense can parents and grandparents expect their children to stay in good shape when the “in-thing” to do is to stay in front of the television, the computer, and the cell phone ?!
If the government is truly concerned about obesity, then tax-payers’ dollars need to be spent to greatly revive the “physical-education” part of school life!
Our local and national governments are trying to create “near geniuses” out of our children, at the expense of little to no “physical-education”!
What happened to the common sense balance of physical education and mental education that was so prevalent during the 1940s through the 1970s?!
In closing, I will say that the answers to the questions about obesity are very, very common sense answers!
The difficulty is going to be whether parents and grandparents are going to take charge of this greatly growing problem and force their children to get some “physical exercise”!
