Police blotter: Craig's List swindler thwarted

A Pawleys Island man knew something was fishy with a Craigs List sale, so he called deputies June 15.

The Hawthorne Drive man said he placed an ad on Craigs List for some gym equipment he was selling for $800.

He corresponded with a potential buyer through e-mail who said he was going to send a check through a reliable courier.

The seller received a check for $1,800 and later received an email from the buyer who said he accidentally made the check out for $1,000 more than the selling price.

He asked the Pawleys Island man to cash the check and send him the extra grand, minus $50 that he could keep for his troubles.

Knowing the check was probably worthless, the man notified authorities rather than cashing the check.

Stinky vandalism

When the owner of Harborwalk Vets Office on Front Street arrived at work June 10, she saw someone had smeared feces on the pillars that lead from the parking lot to the office door.

A pair of boxer shorts containing feces was found in the parking lot.

A potted plant was also destroyed.

The owner said this is not the first incident that has occurred on the property.

Metal theft and drug charges

Police responded to the CSX yard on Winyah Street June 9 after receiving word that a woman was stealing metal from that location.

They arrived and saw the 33-year-old Andrews woman standing next to a pile of metal beside her car.

When asked what she was doing, she said she was cleaning out a cooler. She was then asked if she had any metal in her car and she said “yes.”

Police found about 20 metal pipes and a bucket of railroad spikes in the vehicle.

They also found some marijuana in the car.

The woman was taken to jail and her vehicle was seized since, according to police, it was used in the commission of a crime.

Misspelling attack

A 36-year-old Pleasant Hill area man said he was attacked by his 38-year-old brother after they got into an argument about how to spell their grandfather’s name.

The younger man had blood running down his face when deputies arrived at the Hannah Loop home June 12.

He admitted he was picking on his older brother because he does not know how to spell, which got the older sibling mad.

The two started to wrestle when the younger man was hit on the face with “something other than (his brother’s) fist.”

There were no charges filed.

Shoe attack

A 40-year-old woman said she was talking to a friend outside a home on Lot Drive June 13 when a 61-year-old woman walked up and hit her on the head with a shoe four times. The older woman then slapped the victim on the face.

The accused woman said it was the younger woman who started the altercation.

The woman who was hit required medical attention.
