Police Blotter: Woman says she was raped in Murrells Inlet New Year's Day

One of the first calls deputies had to respond to in 2012 was at the Holiday Inn Express in Murrells Inlet where they met with a 28-year-old Wilmington woman who said she was raped.

She said the rape occurred away from the hotel outside a Murrells Inlet business.

The woman — who met with officers at about 4 a.m. Jan. 1 — said she had been at a club in Murrells Inlet with a group of friends celebrating New Years Eve.

She said she remembers seeing the ball drop in New York on TV and then she got very tired and sick.

She went to the van she and her friends had driven to the bar to lay down. A short while later, a man who is a friend of some of her friends got in the van with her. That, she said, is when the rape took place.

The woman did go to the hospital to be tested and treated.

The case is still under investigation.

Family threats

A 34-year-old Murrells Inlet woman says she, and other members of her family, have been receiving threatening emails, texts and Facebook messages from her brother-in-law who lives in Conway.

The woman told a deputy most of the messages reference songs that contain lyrics about “death and destruction towards others,” the report states.

During a family Christmas gathering, the suspect asked his brother — the husband of the complainant — if he knew the story of Cain and Abel and if he didn’t he needed to learn it.

The woman said her brother-in-law is bipolar but stopped taking his medication.

She said she, at least for now, only wants a report on file about the incidents.

Scooter through a window

Deputies were sent to a home in the 12000 block of Gapway Road at about 10:30 a.m. Dec. 30 and met with a woman who said her boyfriend threw a scooter through a window of her home.

The man admitted the vandalism and said he would pay for the damages.

The woman asked that no charges be filed at that time.

However, deputies were sent back to the same home about two hours later.

She said when her boyfriend returned, they began to argue again. This time he reportedly picked up their baby and left the residence with the child.

She said after she called 911 — and before deputies arrived — the man returned the child and left the house again.

She said she had not been assaulted. The deputy informed her there was nothing he could do about the man taking the child since it is also his baby.

Fake Ben Franklin

An employee of Francis Marion store on Highway 701 said a 30-year-old Georgetown man tried to pay for merchandise with a counterfeit $100 bill Dec. 30.

When the man was informed by the worker the bill was not real, he paid for the purchase with other money.

The man told deputies he had no idea the money was not real. Since he paid for his purchase, he was not charged.

Accidental dye pack explosion

A worker at Wells Fargo Bank in Pawleys Island said she mistakenly left the keys to the bank in the front door Dec. 30.

When she realized the mistake, she walked back to the door while she was holding her money tray which contained a dye pack.

She then walked back behind the counter and the dye pack exploded. She said she thought the pack would not detonate by just being near the exit. She thought the pack had to be outside the building before it would explode.

It was determined there was no criminal intent.

Information  is subject to change as the investigation proceeds. Individuals arrested and/or charged have not been convicted.
