A driver for North Area Taxi in Charleston said he picked up a rider in Goose Creek Sunday evening who wanted to be driven to Fair Lane in Green Acres Mobile Home Park in Georgetown.
The driver was advised by his supervisor that — because of the distance — he would need a $100 deposit before departure. The rider — a 23-year-old man from Vance, S.C. — agreed.
When they arrived in Georgetown, the rider — who owed another $51 for he trip — said he was unsure whether he wanted to stay. He asked the driver to wait while he went inside.
The driver waited for 30 minutes and the man never came back out. He then sent the rider a text asking if he planned to stay in Georgetown and the response was “no” so the driver waited another 30 minutes.
He then sent the man another text stating he needed the balance of his money but the man never responded, so deputies were called.
The rider told the deputy he did not have the money to pay the agreed upon amount, so he was arrested for failure to pay.
Elderly woman scammed
An 87-year-old Andrews woman said someone knocked on her door Dec. 3, and when she opened the door she was greeted by a man who said he was a government worker.
He said he was visiting her to make sure she had heat.
She said she let him in and he asked her to hold one end of a tape measure while he measured her bedroom.
While she was distracted, another man allegedly took $380 from her purse. She discovered the money missing the next day.
Inlet business vandalized
The owner of Kiwi Shades in the 4800 block of Highway 17 Bypass in Murrells Inlet says teenagers vandalized his property Dec. 3.
Several lights were busted on the outside of the business. The acts were caught on video.
The teens can be seen entering the property from Mariner Drive. They are seen picking up rocks and throwing them at the lights, causing the damage.
It appears a female was using a camera phone to video the vandalism as it was taking place.
The case is still being investigated.
Hot sauce attack
On Nov. 30, the Waccamaw High School resource officer was told that a 15-year-old male student had poured hot sauce on three other students.
“There was no physical evidence but the boys said their skin was hurting,” the report states.
The school handled the matter internally and no charges were filed.
Man threatens mom
An Andrews woman — in fear for her safety — called 911 Dec. 1, because her 31-year-old son was “acting crazy and was threatening to destroy her property,” the report states.
She said during the ordeal, her son picked up what looked like a knife and used it to try to pry open a door.
When she told him to stop he started shaking the knife at her.
She left the scene and called deputies from another location.
When deputies arrived, the man had calmed down. The item he was holding was determined to be a screwdriver rather than a knife.
He was arrested for breach of peace.
Information is subject to change as the investigation proceeds. Individuals arrested and/or charged have not been convicted.
