Police Blotter: TV switcheroo scam at WalMart
Published Friday, January 27, 2012 2:24 AM

Police met with WalMart security Tuesday and were told that a man bought a 32-inch television on Jan. 10 for $369.

About six hours later the man returned the television to the store and was given a full refund.

It was later discovered the man had returned an identical TV that does not work. The store  worker said the man took the main serial plate off the new television and placed it on the old TV that he returned to the store in the new TV box.

There are no suspects.

Stolen vehicle

The owner of Georgetown Auto Sales says a 2004 Chevy Suburban was stolen from the lot sometime between Jan. 15 and Tuesday.

There was no glass on the ground around the area where the vehicle was parked to indicate it was broken into.

There are no suspects.

Thief uses ATMs

A Pawleys Island woman — a customer of First Federal Bank — said someone stole her debit card and used it to make about $435 in withdraws from an ATM.

The woman said she noticed the withdraws when she was checking her account Jan. 19.

Because the withdraws were made at ATM not belonging to her bank, she was also hit with more than $60 in service charges.

The woman later found the debit card in her yard which, she said, she cannot explain. She also said she has not given her PIN number to anyone and has not made an online purchase where her debit card information would be entered.

Investigators were told the transactions took place at the ATM at the Bank of America in Pawleys Island. Authorities met with an official at that bank who said a request would be made for the security camera footage from the ATM.

However, it was expected to take about two weeks for the footage to be received.

Problem neighbor

A woman from Tyson Drive in Pawleys Island said her female neighbor has been walking out and yelling “vulgarities” at residents in the neighborhood.

The complainant said the woman has also been “telling lies” about her family.

The woman also said the neighbor has a handgun because she has seen her in the yard with it and, on occasion, has heard it discharge.

The matter is being investigated.

Theft from Salvation Army

Two Salvation Army box trucks, parked at the organization’s Anthuan Maybank headquarters — were  broken into Jan. 19 or 20.

The passenger side windows on both trucks were broken.

A GPS unit was taken from both trucks.

Chairs in the creek

The owner of Capt. Daves Dockside Restaurant in Murrells Inlet spoke with deputies Jan. 20 because someone had taken 11 rocking chairs from the business and threw them in the creek.

He said he was able to recover eight of the chairs but one was broken.

Because the chairs were found over a wide area, the owner said the suspects could have possibly been throwing them out of a boat.

Information  is subject to change as the investigation proceeds. Individuals arrested and/or charged have not been convicted.
