Police Blotter: Problems at the parade

Deputies who were assigned to provide security at the New Year’s Eve parade in the Oatland Community said organizers asked them to make sure the motorcycle riders did not do “burn outs,” drive fast or participate in any other dangerous activities.

One of the deputies informed the bikers they would be ticketed or taken to jail if they did any “burn outs” during the parade.

The motorcyclist who talked to the deputy said they would comply and would spread the word to everyone who was on a motorcycle in the parade.

At least one biker was seen doing burn outs during the parade but because of the size of the crowd, deputies were unable to get to the driver.

The report states the stunt was conducted within feet of babies in strollers and at one point the smoke was so thick, the strollers could not be seen.

The deputy noted there were not enough law enforcement on hand to work the parade. A request was sent for other deputies and the Highway Patrol to respond.

Only two other officers came to assist.

“The safety of the homeowners, participants and onlookers was jeopardized,” the deputy wrote in the report, adding it would have been very difficult to get an ambulance into the area if there had been a problem.

Car vandalism faked

A Stewart Drive woman called deputies to her home Jan. 8 and reported her 36-year-old boyfriend had cut some wires on her car so she could not leave.

An officer spoke to the accused man who said he only pretended to cut the wires.

He admitted he did pull the fuse for the fuel pump so the car would not start.

The man said the car is in both of their names but the woman clams she is the sole owner.

The woman decided she did not want to press charges once her boyfriend replaced the fuse and the car started.

Bone found on the beach

A Myrtle Beach man was on the beach in Garden City using a metal detector Jan. 8 when he found a bone he thought may be human.

He said the bone looked like a knee joint.

The bone was placed into evidence by a deputy.

Coroner Kenny Johnson said he was never notified of the discovery.

Kids home alone

Deputies were sent to a residence on Wagon Wheel Loop in Murrells Inlet Jan. 6 after Central Dispatch received a hang up call on the 911 line.

When a deputy knocked on the door, a 12-year-old boy answered. The deputy saw that child and his 10-year-old sister were in the home alone.

The children said their parents were at work and they were not in school because they had missed the bus.

They said they were trying to call their mother and had mistakenly dialed 911.

While the officer was on the scene, the children’s mother returned. She said she had left home about 30 minutes earlier and thought her children were getting on the bus.

She said she had just started a new job and could not be late.

The children appeared to be in good health so they were allowed to stay with their mother. The case was closed.

Jewelry theft

On Jan. 5, a deputy met with a man at the Sheriff’s Office who reported a theft of items from his mother’s home on Arcadia Plantation Drive.

The man said he believes the items — mainly jewelry — were taken over a year-long period beginning in early 2011.

The man said several people work around his mother’s house but only four have access to the residence.

He said one female worker has confessed to stealing at least some of the jewelry which was reportedly pawned in Surfside Beach.

The case is still being investigated.

Information  is subject to change as the investigation proceeds. Individuals arrested and/or charged have not been convicted.
