A man who owns wooded property on Tyson Drive in Pawleys Island said someone has been staying on the land without permission recently. His attempts to catch them has been unsuccessful but a campsite was found

When the deputy walked to the makeshift camp with the property owner, he saw someone moving around. He walked over and spoke to the suspect — a 24-year-old Pawleys Island man.

The suspect told the deputy he thought he could stay there because he was unaware it was private property.

Based on what was found, it looked like the man had been staying there quite a while, the deputy reported.

The man was arrested for trespassing. As the deputy was looking over the campsite, he found bags containing numerous items including battery packs and a variety of car wash supplies.

When questioned about the items, the man said his mother owns a car wash and gave the things to him.

When contacted by phone, the man’s mother denied knowing about the items.

Man attacks ex

A 33-year-old Georgetown woman said she was walking on Alex Alford Blvd. at about 7:10 p.m. Dec. 14 when her ex-boyfriend — a 54-year-old Georgetown man — approached her and started cursing her.

The man then reportedly grabbed her by the back of the jacket, knocked her on the ground and yelled that if he could not have her, nobody could have her.

The man allegedly said he would stab her and he “had people with guns that would blow her head off.”

A witness reported hearing the altercation and the man was arrested. Once at jail, a knife was found in his pocket.

Shoplifters at Wilco

Several people were seen on security camera video stealing from the new Wilco Dec. 16.

A man is seen walking around the store for about 10 minutes before talking to the cashier. While they were talking five others walked in, grabbed cases of beer and walked out without paying.

Everyone left the store in a vehicle.

The suspects have not been identified.

Fish and Chips burglary

A burglary was reported at Lamar’s Fish and Chips in the 200 block of Merriman Road Dec. 17.

The owner showed an officer a broken window where the suspect entered and exited the building.

Taken was $25 in cash, $150 worth of earrings and necklaces, several sodas and possibly some other items.

No arrests have been made.

Hit and run and

hospital assault

Police were sent to the 2000 block of Front Street at about 10:30 p.m. Dec. 16 after a man caused about $1,500 worth of damage with his vehicle and fled the scene.

A woman who lives at that location said she heard a loud noise and looked outside and saw a vehicle had driven through her neighbor’s fence.

The driver then backed up and hit a manhole cover. Then he pulled forward and hit a telephone pole and a garbage can then drove away from the scene.

During the course of the investigation it was discovered the driver was at the hospital where he allegedly got into a physical altercation with his girlfriend.

The man is accused of punching her in the face while at the hospital after they got into an argument about where he had been with the car.

The woman said when he hit her, she fell on the floor and he hit her several more times.

During a patdown by police, about 0.7 grams of marijuana was found in the man’s pocket.

He was taken to jail for various charges including leaving the scene of an accident, disturbing a hospital, possession of marijuana and malicious injury to property.

Employee theft

A man who worked at Belk on North Fraser Street is accused of stealing money from the store.

A manager said they had been keeping an eye on the worker because of suspicions the theft was occurring.

They said almost $1,500 was missing from his register Dec. 16. The man allegedly admitted taking the cash which, he said, was in his truck. He said his girlfriend had his truck but she had no knowledge the money was in the vehicle.

The investigation revealed the man’s register had been short several times and nearly $3,500 had been taken since early December.

He said he used the cash to pay child support and bills.

After being placed under arrest, the man was searched and cash was found in all of his pockets and his wallet. About $1,650 was in his possession at the time.

He was taken to jail.

Information  is subject to change as the investigation proceeds. Individuals arrested and/or charged have not been convicted.
