Up Front — the newest belle of the ball

Before setting sail on our two-year trip there was much ado about everything to consider. My husband Noel was tasked with outfitting our ketch rigged Morgan 452 sailboat, rebuilding the engine, designing a refrigeration system, and sealing all the leaks in the decks. Sounds like a piece of cake, I know … and he left me with the tough job — I had to figure out what clothes to pack! (I still get teased for carrying a curling iron, lipstick and kitten heels in my backpack through the Amazon Rain Forest, so you see I’m not really starting off on solid ground in this department.)
Our departure day approached nearly as fast as our storage units reached capacity, so it seemed the perfect time to purge extra household goods and get rid of any clothes that were not stowed away on board. Wool suits — gone. Maternity clothes — way, way, gone! Winter sweaters, hats, gloves and scarves — out the door — I’d had enough of freezing thank you very much.
It was fun while it lasted, but after 15,000 miles, the boat clothes were ready for a burial at sea. Sun faded, mildew spotted and starched by constant salt water, I was happy to never set eyes on them again. Like ever. When you make a bold gesture to give away your entire wardrobe —the best place to go shopping is somewhere that makes you smile so much your cheek muscles start to hurt. Front Street’s newest belle of the ball, the Sly Fox, is a guaranteed perma-grin!
New on the scene, The Sly Fox debuted Memorial Day weekend and has been welcomed right into the neighborhood. “I love the ideas of visitors becoming customers, but I just adore my locals!” said owner Linda Abate. Shortly after her store opened, she was touched to see so many familiar faces dropping by the store. “It was heartwarming that just about every person we’ve ever come in contact with come by the store to wish me luck and see what we had.” Relationships with her Front Street neighbors are important and not only do they freely refer customers to each other, but they “understand the importance of synergy” and believe that “high tides raise all the boats.”
Linda opened her first store up in Ocean City, Maryland when she was only 25 and not only does she have a great eye for merchandise, she is also very business savvy. Utilizing social media for marketing her store has earned her nearly 1,500 likes on her Facebook page already and is a great way for her to keep in touch with customers who are from out of town. She posts new products and helpful fashion tutorials (like scarf tying) on her page, but also posts information about Georgetown and all that it has to offer. “Front Street is so charming, with the attractive downtown and Harborwalk” said Linda, and “once people finally discover it they keep coming back.”
And when they come back, I’m certain the Sly Fox will be on their must shop there list! Linda offers a beautiful and colorful collection of nautical and beach-inspired clothing and accessories, but works to have timeless, classic lines for customers who are shopping in the Sly Fox year ’round. Susan Shaw jewelry, Hatley, Mudpie and Escapada Living are just a few of the boutique lines with new arrivals coming in daily for the fall. Zoubaby monogramed black wellies are the perfect footwear for cooler days where style and practicality come together classically.
You don’t have to give away your entire wardrobe before you visit the Sly Fox, but I promise you’ll be tempted! Shopping nirvana awaits you at 712 Front Street Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Make it your business to keep it local.
