Film producers looking at county for two new movies
Amanda Cook and Courtenay Turner, co-producers with a feature film company called Quixotic Memes Productions, LLC, are eying the City of Georgetown and surrounding areas for two new films.
They say they are more than willing to follow all city and county ordinances that deal with film production.
The two films are a psychological thriller titled “Mortuary 2” and a family movie called “Princess Pooch,” in which a young girl wishes herself into the body of her dog.
Cook and Turner are asking local residents who would like to be extras, or can offer a location for either of these films to contact them.
“We are working on getting the word out,” Cook said. “We want to hire locally and take advantage of the tax incentives offered by the South Carolina Film Commission.”
She said they are especially looking at local plantations for possible filming locations.
They are also seeking dogs from local animal shelters for the starring role in “Princess Pooch.”
“Why pay money for Hollywood dogs when so many dogs in shelters just need some training to do the same tasks,” Cook said.
Businesses interested in being a sponsor for the movies will have an option for product placement, she said.
“We are hoping to get a list of 18 companies that will offer things at a discount or free,” Cook said. "We are still seeking private placements and equity funds for both ‘Mortuary 2’ and ‘Princess Pooch.’”
Tee Miller, economic development director for the City of Georgetown, said if the movies are filmed in the city limits, Cook and Turner will have to get a special application for filming if they are filming on public property.
If they block a street, they will have to have a special event permit.
He said there could be some significant economic impact for the area and with state incentives for filming movies some of the fees could be waved.
“We’d love to help anyone fill out an application to film in our city,” Miller said. “It can be a win-win situation.”
Boyd Johnson, planning director for Georgetown County, said Cook and Turner will have to abide by the new county ordinance that restricts filming in residential neighborhoods on the Waccamaw Neck.
“They would not be able to shine bright lights at night, noise would be an issue and they would have to give warning about anything that would startle people such as explosions, car crashes, or low flying airplanes.”
He added that they will have to notify businesses or residences within 500 feet of sight so people in area know what is coming.
Cook said she and her crew will follow all rules and regulations for filming in the county and within the city limits.
“We don’t want to disrupt people’s lives,” she said.
