Karen Cafaro to be on Jeopardy
The question: Who is Karen Cafaro?
The answer: An educator who is in California this week where she is a contestant on Jeopardy.
Cafaro, an English literature and composition teacher at Scotland High School in Laurinburg, is the wife of former Georgetown High School Principal Dr. Mike Cafaro, who is now the district's Director of Student Support Services and Special Programs.
Dr. Cafaro said his wife left for Los Angeles over the weekend to participate in the 4th edition of the Jeopardy Teacher's Tournament.
He said she tried out for the program in Charlotte but was not chosen.
She later tried out while they were in Tampa. After that tryout she was told she would be placed in a pool of possible contestants for regular Jeopardy or the Teachers Tournament.
She found out in July she was chosen for the tournament.
The two-week event, airing November 11-22, will feature 15 K-12 teachers from all over North America battling it out for the $100,000 grand prize and a berth in the next Tournament of champions, according to a press release
from the program. “The Teachers Tournament contestants spend their days nurturing and shaping young minds, so some viewers may be sur- prised when they come on our show and they're just as aggressive and competitive as the rest of our contest- ants,” said host Alex Trebek.
“Last year, the winner of the Teachers Tournament went on to win the Tournament of Champions; will this year's winner enjoy the same success?”
In order to qualify for the tournament, prospective contestants were selected from those who passed a 50-question online test.
These hopefuls were then invited to attend regional, in-person auditions consisting of a second 50-question test, an interview, and mock game play.
