Sometimes, we just need to say thank you to folks who do their jobs and do them well. And right now, that thanks goes out to the United States Coast Guard.

On Saturday, a flight crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., was in St. Johns, Newfoundland, in preparations for a ceremony to drop five wreaths over the Titanic resting site.

However, the crew diverted from that mission — as honorable as it was — to fly 1,300 miles to assist the crew of a small sailing vessel.

Their plan was to drop a pump, a hand-held radio and other supplies. Their request came via a rescue center in Normandy, France.

Meanwhile, the oil tanker Moscow Sea was diverting to the sailing vessel to offer on-scene assistance.

Much has changed since the Titanic sank 100 years ago.

And we’re thankful for the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard, whether they’re in Boston, Newfoundland, flying out to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, or right here at Coast Guard Station Georgetown.

We salute all these honorable men and women who are “Semper Paratus” — “Always Ready.”
