OK. It’s the new year. We’re starting off 2013 with the first black president. Barack Obama made history again when he was reelected to a second term. He and members of the United States House of Representatives and Senate will be working to come to grips with major issues facing our country and the world.
Taking part in those discussions will be new 7th District Congressman Tom Rice. That district now includes all of Georgetown County.
Tim Scott, who had been 1st District Congressman serving part of Georgetown County, will take on his new role as the first black Republican Senator since Reconstruction. Jim Clyburn, the lone Democratic Representative from South Carolina, has represented the 6th District in Congress, including the western part of our county.
Clyburn will likely be involved on the side of Obama as the House, Senate and President tackle multiple national and international issues.
While all of those things grab the headlines and fill the airwaves nationally, it’s important locally to recap what’s taken place. We should also figure out what we will do individually and throughout Georgetown County as we start a new year.
It’s interesting, instructive and informative to read about the top stories of 2012, and we’re presenting brief looks at some of those local issues in our paper today.
At the same time, we should each invest our own time and energy in learning from the past so we can do a better job in the future.
Our kids are precious. Whatever we do locally and nationally, they will take on those successes and those burdens in the years to come.
What sort of world do we want to leave for our kids and grand kids?
That really is up to us.
We can take the easy way and let someone else tackle the issues. Or, we can do more. We can find out about the things that are important in Georgetown County, in our schools, city and county government, our churches and our retail businesses and industries.
We can learn from history, from the mistakes we as a society make, and do a better job.
It’s our hope that each one of us will invest in the future of our world by spending time to make Georgetown County and America better places for these kids.
Happy New Year. Let’s make it so.
