Port of Georgetown business is getting a nice shot in the arm.

South Carolina State Ports Authority vice president Byron Miller announced Friday morning that Metglas Inc. of Conway will have its first shipment of steel billets arrive in Georgetown on Nov. 6.

The electrical component manufacturer will import steel from Canada to the Port of Georgetown and then truck them to the Conway plant as needed.

Initial plans call for six ships to bring 17,000 tons of steel a year through Georgetown.

That's the first incoming shipping contract in a decade, officials said at a gathering at the South Carolina Maritime Museum on Front Street in Georgetown.

See the next issue of the Georgetown Times for much more on this contract and its impact on the city and county.
