Police sergeant saves suicidal man

Georgetown Police Sgt. Jimmy Burke is credited with saving the life of a man threatening suicide this afternoon. It happened at about 2:45 p.m. at East Bay Park. The Georgetown man was in a vehicle when, according to Lloyd and Amber Ward, who were at the park at the time, the man stepped from his vehicle and walked towards the water. He continued walking until he was in the water. Police and EMS were called to the scene. Police Capt. Nelson Brown said when Burke arrived on the scene, he went into the water and was able to pull the man to safety. “He said he was trying to drown himself,” Brown said. The man was taken to the hospital for an evaluation.
