New auditor Shult to fire Harrelson
Brian Shult, who was elected Georgetown County Auditor in November, will take over the office on Monday.
But even before he is sworn into office, Shult is making at least one staff change.
Kathy Harrelson — who has worked in the auditor’s office for the past seven years and also ran for the auditor’s seat in November — has been told she will be out of a job when Shult takes over.
In a statement released Tuesday, Harrelson said she was called to meet with Shult Friday afternoon.
“I was advised by him he did not want me on his team. He said he had been hearing rumors, therefore he cannot trust me,” Harrelson said.
Neither Harrelson nor Shult would elaborate on the rumors.
“He fired me because I ran for the same office,” Harrelson said. “I ran a clean race and was giving the people of Georgetown County a choice.”
Shult, when asked about this situation, said he is not in the position to comment on a personnel matter.
When asked about Harrelson’s belief that she is being let go because she was a candidate, Shult simply said “she knows better than that.”
Outgoing Auditor Linda Mock endorsed Harrelson for the seat during last year’s election.
