GEORGETOWN, S.C. — A freak county line accident resulted in serious injuries for a Georgetown man driving on Highway 701 Monday afternoon.
According to S.C. Highway Patrol spokesman Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins, 47-year-old Robert Poston was southbound near the Georgetown/Horry County line at around 3:15 p.m. when a trailer broke loose from a northbound dump truck.
The trailer, carrying a bulldozer, crossed the center line and struck Poston’s vehicle forcing it into a bridge guard rail.
Emergency crews from Georgetown and Horry Counties worked cautiously to remove Poston from his vehicle.
It took more than 90 minutes to get Poston onto a stretcher and to a waiting helicopter to be transported to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
The nature of his injuries was not known by the Highway Patrol.
Collins said the dump truck driver, 29-year-old Ashley Smith of Gallivants Ferry, was unhurt.
The accident brought traffic to a standstill for nearly three-and-a-half hours.
Many people decided to detour through Hemingway in order to bypass the accident.
