GEORGETOWN, S.C. — A Georgetown man has been charged with felony driving under the influence in the fatal automobile accident Sunday on Highway 51.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins said Thursday Timothy Pitts, 24, of Seabrook Court has been charged with the offense.
Pitts, Collins said, was driving the 2000 Chevrolet Impala in which 26-year-old Dorlena Scott of Shannon Drive was a passenger.
Scott was ejected from the car.
She was transported to the Medical University of South Carolina where she died, Coroner Kenny Johnson said.
Pitts was hospitalized for his injuries. He was charged after being released from the hospital.
The crash happened at about 12:15 a.m. Sunday on Highway 51 near Browns Ferry Bridge.
The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.
Collins said Thursday that the Highway Patrol does not release information about what substance a person with this charge has in their system.
He also said information about the amount of the substance in the person’s system is also not released.
That information is made public when the case goes to trial, Collins said.
After the accident, Johnson was told Scott died on her birthday. On Tuesday, Johnson learned her birthday is in September.
“That was the information I received from the Medical University,” Johnson said about the incorrect date of birth.
Scott is the second person to die in a traffic accident in Georgetown County this year
