Seven assaults — most on corrections officers — were reported at the Georgetown County Detention Center within the past week.
The first incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. July 4 when a 21-year-old inmate was attacked by three other inmates who were all in the same pod, the report states.
The victim said when he arrived at jail on July 3, a 19-year-old inmate from Pawleys Island told him he had to “holler at him” in the morning. He said he paid no attention to the man.
The next morning, the 19-year-old was talking to the victim who thought everything was OK but the two other suspects called him over to their cell and wanted to know why he was not “running with them in the gang anymore,” the report continues.
The victim said he told them he wanted no trouble and walked away but the 19-year-old followed him and punched him in the head. The other two men then joined in and started beating him.
When an officer saw what was happening, he opened the cell door and the victim was able to get away from his attackers.
The three suspects were expected to be charged with assault and battery.
Later that day, a 43-year-old inmate said he was attacked by three individuals.
He said his cell door had been left unlocked when a 20-year-old inmate walked in and the two were talking. For a reason not explained, the 20-year-old used what is believed to have been a bar of soap in a sock to hit the victim on the head.
Two other inmates are also accused of attacking the man, one with a broom
On July 6, the same 20-year-old inmate allegedly assaulted two corrections officers who were working in the food department.
One of the officers said he was serving lunch and when he handed the inmate his tray, the inmate threw a cup full of liquid on him, striking him on his shirt as well as his face and mouth.
The guard said he was unsure if the liquid was Kool Aid or body fluid.
A short while later, as an officer was picking up the lunch trays, the man threw a cup of cole slaw on him that was “watered down with either water or urine,” the report states.
A female officer said an 18-year-old inmate threw a cup of Kool Aid on her as she was passing out supper trays the same day.
On Saturday, another officer was handing out food trays when he was hit with liquid by three different inmates. One of the suspects told the officer the next time “it would be feces,” according to the report.
On Sunday, a female officer was the victim of the liquid throwing as she handed out food trays.
The suspect is the same 18-year-old from one of the previous incidents.
The officer said the liquid — which hit her on the face — had a urine odor.
Warrants were expected to be signed against the suspects for assaulting corrections officers.
