Firefighters were busy overnight fighting  a woods fire in the Maryvile area of Georgetown.

The fire, which was reported at about 7 p.m., was off of Mary

Hines Lane in the area of Prince George Nursing Center, said City Assistant Fire Chief Bill Johnson.

He said the SC Forestry Commission was called to assist and cut a trench around the blaze to keep it from spreading.

Georgetown firefighters worked successfully to keep the flames away from the houses and other structures in the area.

Johnson said it took about two hours to extinguish the blaze which charred about five acres.

It was the second time in as many weeks a fire broke out in that area of woods, Johnson said.

There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
