The list of contenders for the position of Georgetown City administrator — which began with  225 applicants — has been narrowed to six.

Mayor Jack Scoville said he hopes someone will be hired to the position before the end of November.

In July, City Council agreed to hire Slavin Management Consultants of Norcross, Ga., to conduct the search at a cost of $20,825.

Scoville said the firm pored through the applications and is now in the process of conducting a detailed background check on the six finalists and will soon meet with council to discuss the findings.

It will then be decided if council wants to interview all six or if they want the field to be narrowed to fewer candidates before interviewing.

“If there turns out to be a problem in any of the background checks, we don’t want that person to come for an interview,” Scoville said.

Scoville would not give specifics about where the six are currently located but did say most are from outside South Carolina.

A meeting will be held Monday with the Slavin consultant to discuss the finalists.
