Diners at Thomas Cafe on Front Street received quite a scare when a car crashed through the front of the restaurant during the lunch hour Tuesday.
Fortunately, no one was injured even though there had been a family sitting at the table next to the window when the crash occurred at around 12:30 p.m.
Ellie Hopkins was in the center of the restaurant enjoying lunch when the accident took place.
“I was sitting there reading when the car came through the window,” she said.
Hopkins said the family sitting next to the window consisted of a man, woman and three young children. The man had been seated with his back to the window.
“The man stood up and said ‘Oh” and walked towards my table with a surprised look on his face,” she said.
The family, Hopkins said, quickly paid for their meal and left.
Phil Brady, who was facing the window, said he saw the car jump the curb and crash into the window.
“The car was immediately put into reverse and the driver backed into the parking spot,” Brady said.
Georgetown Police Capt. Nelson Brown said the driver — who lives in North Carolina — hit the accelerator when he was attempting to brake after pulling into a parking place. He was not charged although he was found to the contributor to the accident.
Police kept busy trying to keep people away from the damaged area of the building which was not immediately evacuated. However, city officials later closed the restaurant due to structural damage.
An employee said they were going to try to reopen for business on Wednesday morning.
