An investigation has been launched into a fire that destroyed a home in Georgetown early Tuesday morning.

City Fire Chief Joey Tanner said arson is suspected in the blaze at a vacant two-story home  at 204 “A” Street.

The fire was reported at about 4 a.m. Tuesday.

When crews arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from the second floor, Tanner said.

There were fires in the stairwell and on the second floor when crews got inside. The fire had progressed into the attic, Tanner said.

The was no electricity in the house, which is why arson is suspected.

It took nearly two hours to extinguish the fire.

The Georgetown Police Department is the lead agency investigating the fire.
