Accident on the county line kills Conway woman
There were two major accidents in the Murrells Inlet area around the same time Friday. One claimed the life of an elderly woman and led to confusion about where that accident actually occurred.
Earlier, it was reported by the Georgetown County Coroner's Office the fatal accident took place in a three-vehicle collision at about 10:15 a.m. Friday in the southbound lanes of Highway 17 near Wesley Road.
Coroner Kenny Johnson said Saturday afternoon there were no fatalities in that accident. Johnson said the fatality actually occurred at about 12:45 p.m. Friday on Highway 707 near Burgess Road.
Killed in the accident was 93-year-old Marguerite Freeland of Conway. She was transported to Waccamaw Hospital where she died later Friday.
S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins said the driver, also an elderly person, ran off of Highway 707 and hit a street sign then a tree.
Collins said the sign that was hit was the Georgetown County sign at the Georgetown/Horry County line.
That, Johnson said, is one reason for the initial confusion because it was unclear in which county the accident took place.
He said another reason for the misunderstanding was because there were people being transported to the hospital from both the Highway 17 and the Highway 707 accidents at the same time.
