An innovative fashion show that features couture made of recyclable material will take place tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. at Waccamaw Intermediate School.

“Waccamaw Intermediate Gators Go Green,” will allow the students in all three grades to show their fashion sense while learning how to protect the environment.

In another twist, the students will use characters they find in their history and literature books as a backdrop for their creations.

“We’ve tried to integrate the curriculum,” said Becky Fico, PTO president for Waccamaw Intermediate.  “It’s sort of a double education. They have to learn about what is recyclable and what is not.”

The children could develop recyclable outfits from the Renaissance era, which is the current educational focus of students in the sixth grade, Fico said.

Both boys and girls will participate in Thursday’s fashion show, Fico said.

Each class in the fourth, fifth and sixth grade has been assigned to come up with different outfits, Fico said. The show will most likely have at least 30 to 50 models.

Vendors with green, environmentally friendly products will also set up displays during the fashion show.

“We’ll have vendors there, with information on such things as greening your house, eating better and recycling,” Fico said. “The whole event is free to parents and families. We’re encouraging everyone to come for the educational component.”

Judges will brought in from the local school district and salons from the Waccamaw Neck.  The panel includes School Superintendent Randy Dozier,  Sandy Lawrence, the owner of Beautiful Salon and Amy Bunn, owner of the Joggling Board.

“The fashion show just emerged from the whole way to teach how to go green,” Fico said. “We thought it would bring it to life.”
