Plenty of golfers dream of getting a hole-in-one. It's a rare occurrence, with odds something like 5,000-to-one to put the ball in the cup in a given game. That's for a low-handicapper. For an "average player," About.com states, it's about 12,000 to one.
Larry Miller of Georgetown just made his 5th hole-in-one. He accomplished his feat on Sunday at Wedgefield Plantation Country Club.
Retired from GM in Michigan, Miller and his wife Marge moved to Georgetown 11 years ago.
Miller made his hole-in-one on the new 16th hole at The Wedgefield Plantation Country Club.
He used a 9 iron for the 130-yard shot. The ball went into the hole on the fly.
Witnesses were Marge Miller, Sandy Lawrence of Beautiful Salon & Spa, and Jim Lawrence of Computer & Software Solutions.
How to do it
"You've just gotta play a lot of golf and be lucky," Miller said.
He got his first hole-in-one 14 years ago while he was still living in Michigan. He made two more there, before making the move to Georgetown in 1999.
"I played almost every day for nine years," he said.
As for the course, there have been a lot of changes over the past 11 years with several owners.
In St. Clair, Michigan, Miller was mostly a weekend golfer because he was still working at General Motors. His home was on the St. Clair River, about 60 miles north of Detroit.
Miller and his wife Marge had friends from GM who retired to Georgetown.
"We came to visit and decided it would be a good place for us, too," Miller said.
He plays in a men's golf group at Wedgefield on Monday and Thursday mornings.
"I started playing golf when I was about 14 years old, in the late 1950s."
Now, about 50 years later, he's made his 5th hole-in-one.
"I've been playing a long time."
"I started out as a caddy at a country club in Michigan. That's how I started playing golf," Miller said.
His previous hole-in-one at Wedgefield was on July 4, 2002, on the 13th hole.
In 1996, Miller made two holes-in-one in Michigan and followed that a year later with another, all at the St. Clair golf club.
