• World Series bound
"On the road again" might be the song playing on car radios as members of the Georgetown Dixie Debs travel in the wee hours today to get to Vancleave, Mississippi.
The 12 softball players, parents, coaches and friends are heading to the Dixie Softball World Series in the town near the Gulf Coast of Mississippi.
Last Wednesday, July 21, the Georgetown Debs won back-to-back games in Union County to earn their fifth state championship title.
They've been to World Series games before and are looking to bring home the bacon -- no, the trophy -- this year.
In 2007, the Georgetown Dixie Debs won the Dixie Softball World Series over Florida.
They've also been runner-up in two other World Series matches.
Familiar territory
Pat Wildes and Nelson Brown have been coaching the team for a number of years, so they know the girls and they know the process.
Brown said the team members would be hitting the road about 10 p.m. Thursday for the 12 hour, 750-mile drive.
In that part of the Gulf Coast, travelers can go through Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana in just over 100 miles.
The team may not go to Louisiana, but they will travel through the other states.
Practices, keyed up
Over the past week, Brown said, "We've been doing our regular routine practices. We've been hitting, infield, throwing and doing a lot of running.
"It's hot in Mississippi. We want to be in good shape.
"The girls are keyed up coming off the state win. They're ready to play."
The World Series for Dixie Softball is a double-elimination tournament. There are 11 teams playing, and Georgetown faces Decatur, Alabama in the first game of the series at 10 a.m. Central Daylight Time Saturday morning.
After that first game, it depends on how the games go as to when the Georgetown Dixie Debs will play again.
"We're looking forward to it," Brown said.
"Traditionally, we've had a pretty good showing. I don't see why we wouldn't again this year."
