Carvers Bay's girls basketball team lost 63-40 to Latta last week, in a very physical game that left several Bears limping and one bloodied.

"Our girls played as hard as they could," Carvers Bay coach Joe Epps said. "Latta has a lot of weapons."

Carvers Bay kept the game close in the first half, trailing only 9-7 after the first quarter and 24-22 at halftime.

But Latta outscored the Bears 20-5 in the third quarter and 19-13 in the fourth.

"We're still making some mistakes," Epps said. "Too many turnovers and we're not making our free throws."

The game was full of collisions and bodies rolling around on the floor, leaving Epps to exclaim on several occasions: "They're killing my girls out there."

The Bears' offense was hurt by an injury to Jasmine Cobb, who rolled an ankle after stepping on a Latta player's foot in the first half. She returned with 1:30 left in the third quarter but clearly struggled to get up and down the court.

Around the county

Aaliyah Hudson led Waccamaw with nine points. Imani Carr had eight points, Jamaica Alston had six, Mary Tyler had five and Rachel Thornton had four.

The Warriors were coming off a 71-22 loss to Mullins.

Andrews beat Timberland 31-21 last week.

The Yellow Jackets led 9-8 after the first quarter, but the Wolves rallied to take a 14-12 lead at the half. Andrews regained the led in the third quarter and outscored Timberland 13-3 in the fourth for the victory.

Quanisha Brown led Andrews with eight points and six rebounds. Shina Brown had seven points and three rebounds, and Neosha Greene had six points and 11 rebounds.

Andrews was coming off a 57-35 loss to Kingstree.

The Yellow Jackets were held to single digits in scoring in each of the first three quarters but rallied for 14 points in the fourth.

Jetovia Jackson led Andrews with 13 points and eight rebounds. Neosha Greene had nine points and nine rebounds, Amara Greene had five points, and Jaleika Filmore had five rebounds.

Lowcountry Prep beat Coastal Christian Prep 58-19 to win the SCISA Region IV-A championship.

"It feels great for the girls to win the region outright, considering how competitive it is," coach Danny Bell said.

"They have come together and pulled out the tough wins against the best teams, yet we know a region championship, while great, is not our goal. Our only goal remains to be the last team playing on the last day."

Lowcountry Prep held Coastal Christian scoreless in the first quarter and led 31-5 at the half and 42-12 at the end of the third.

Every member of the Fighting Marlins scored in the game.

Rachael Exum and Marguerite McClary had 10 points each to lead Lowcountry Prep. Sydney Derrick had eight points, Sarah Exum had seven, and Leldon McClary and Elizabeth Zieser had six each.

"I am extremely proud of this team and how they have stayed together in tough times," Bell said. "Our camaraderie should be a huge asset come playoff time."
