The rather mild winter the area has experienced this year was replaced by actual winter weather Saturday as rain changed over to snow.

A cold front followed by an area of low pressure passed through South Carolina Saturday afternoon and evening.

Temperatures dropped from the low 50s to near freezing after sunset Saturday. By later in the evening a dusting of snow was reported in most areas of the county. Some bursts of heavier snowfall were also reported, especially in the western areas of the county.

Some Georgetown Times readers also reported hail mixing with the snow for a brief period.

Even though the snow caused no reported problems, the South Carolina Highway Patrol is urging motorists to drive with caution. As temperatures dip to the mid to upper 20s this morning, any water on roadways will freeze creating black ice conditions.

No more snow is expected but it will remain cold today with a high, under sunny skies, of 45 degrees. Monday morning will be even colder with a morning low near 24.

Another front moves in Tuesday. By then highs will be in the 60s so it will be an all-rain event.
