It was loud and it shook houses and buildings all over eastern Georgetown County.

The cause is still unknown.

Central Dispatch started receiving calls about "explosion" sounds at a little before 8 p.m.

According to posts on the Georgetown Times Facebook page, people from south of Maryville to Wedgefield and to Hobcaw experienced the phenomenon.

Georgetown City firefighters were sent out to investigate but found nothing that could explain what was heard and felt.

Georgetown police had the same results after checking things out.

A similar occurrence took place in the area in April, 2010. At that time, the U.S. Geological Survey told the Georgetown Times very slight shakes, sometimes known as “Seneca guns,” that are so slight that they cannot be registered on seismic equipment, may be the cause.

Seneca guns seem particularly concentrated off the Carolinas.
