Carvers Bay's boys basketball team scored the first nine points against Andrews on Tuesday night en route to a 77-53 win.

"We have a lot to get better on," said Bears coach Jeff Mezzatesta. "I think defensively I'm proud of the kids but [not] as far as gelling and playing together and knowing the offenses and recognizing the defenses people are in .... It's early in the season so that's to be expected."

"We've had better games and we could do a thousand times better but I think we did pretty good," said Darius Williams, who scored nine points for the Bears.

The Yellow Jackets battled to cut the lead to 18-10 at the end of the first quarter and used pressure defense to get to within 24-17.

Da'Shaun Aiken's basket and foul shot put Carvers Bay ahead 27-17 with 4 minutes left in the half, and the Bears extended it to 39-23 at halftime.

Carvers Bay held off Andrews in the second half, leading by as many 24 points in the third quarter and 26 points in the fourth quarter.

Despite the lopsided victory, Carvers Bay players were not overconfident.

"The game went pretty well but we could do better," said Shayton Durand, who scored 14 points. "We still have to fix a couple holes in our plays and get back on [defense]."

Aiken led the Bears with 20 points. Nigel Gamble and Shaquan Durand had eight points each, Eaddy Moore had five and DeQuan Wilson had four.

Carvers Bay's girls beat Andrews 59-40.

The Yellow Jackets came out strong and led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Bear rebounded to lead 27-25 at halftime, and held the Yellow Jackets to single digits in the third and fourth quarters.

Latesja Dean had 10 points, three rebounds and three steals to lead Andrews. Brittany McKnight had 10 points and four rebounds; Shemeika McCray had seven points and five steals; Zanayvia Deas had seven points and three rebounds; Edwina Samuel had four rebounds; and Nyesha Filmore had three steals.
